Greenford Station: – Phase II & III – L&E Civils Works

Project: Greenford Station – Phase II & III – Civil Works in Conjunction with Installation of New Inclined Lift and the Replacement of Existing Central Staircase

Client: London Underground Limited – L&E Team

Works Value: £1.4 Million

As part of the installation of new Inclined Lift & Central Staircase at Greenford Station, our task was to carry the civil works in conjunction with the install.

The project was a first for London Underground (LU) and the wider UK rail industry, as the special ‘incline’ lift travels on a gradient alongside the escalator and stairs.  D&D Rail Limited were proud to be part of this project, with this innovative lift being cheaper to install as it saves the cost of excavating a lift shaft, can utilise an existing escalator space and is 50 per cent more efficient than a standard lift as it only uses half as much power to run.

Works involved the following:

Incline Lift

  • Removal of redundant concrete motor base and support columns concrete from the UMC, Incline & LMC.  A temporary dust screen was formed, segregating entire worksite from new Escalator No. 1 which had been brought into passenger service.  Noise enclosures were set up throughout the worksite to comply with Section 61 measures in force, and to protect passengers & staff from unnecessary noise levels.  A combination of track sawing, drilling & bursting and breaking was utilised to condense concrete into manageable sections for safe removal from the station.  Continual noise monitoring was undertaken during the removal process by electrically powered plant.
  • Removal of redundant existing supporting steel work to Platform level & Ticket Hall level floor areas. The steel work was cut under Hot Works procedures to reduce the weight of sections and enable safe removal of component pieces.
  • New supporting steel work (columns and beams) were installed ready to form new floor slabs at both Platform and Ticket Hall levels.
  • New holorib and slab edge formers were fixed into position, and concrete poured ready to form new Platform and Ticket Hall level floor slabs.
  • Pigeon mitigation works were carried out at high level, by means of closing in gaps around station roof support structure to aid in the prevention of vermin roosting above new Escalator 1 & Inclined Lift.
  • New reinforced concrete foundation constructed throughout incline ready to receive new Stepoc walling.
  • New reinforced concrete Stepoc walling constructed throughout incline ready to receive new concrete capping beam.
  • New reinforced concrete capping beam constructed throughout incline ready to receive new Primary Glazing support steelwork.
  • Installation of temporary works (Lifting scaffold and temporary running beams) to lift new Primary Glazing support steel work and Central Staircase steel work into position.
  • Installation of new Primary Glazing support steel work structure.
  • New reinforced concrete wall constructed throughout incline, encasing live power cables.
  • Form new support base for Inclined Lift buffer in Lift Pit.
  • Installation of new Aco drainage from Lift Pit to LMC Sump and lay new floor screed to falls.
  • Finish render applied to Stepoc and flank walls.
  • Permanent supporting steel work installed on Incline ready to receive new Inclined Lift Track Way.
  • Installation of new access floor trays into UMC at Platform level.
  • Lay new resin floor finish at Platform Level.
  • Installation of new access / escape hatch into LMC at Ticket Hall level.
  • Lay new floor tile finish at Ticket Hall Level.

Central Staircase

  • Removal of redundant concrete support columns from the Incline.  A temporary dust screen was formed, segregating entire worksite from existing Escalator No. 3 which at the time was still in passenger service.  Noise enclosures were set up throughout the worksite to comply with Section 61 measures in force, and to protect passengers & staff from unnecessary noise levels.  A combination of track sawing, drilling & bursting and breaking was utilised to condense concrete into manageable sections for removal from the station.  Continual noise monitoring was undertaken during the removal process by electrically powered plant.
  • Removal of redundant floor trays top and bottom of staircase.  The floor trays were cut under Hot Works procedures to reduce the weight of sections and enable safe removal of component pieces.
  • Removal of redundant passenger staircase from Platform level down to Ticket Hall level, including all support steel work and cladding.  The staircase was cut under Hot Works procedures to reduce the weight of sections and enable safe removal of component pieces.
  • Removal of redundant supporting steel work and supporting beams, to Platform level & Ticket Hall level floor areas. The steel work was cut under Hot Works procedures to reduce the weight of sections and enable safe removal of component pieces.
  • New supporting steel work, by means of columns and beams were installed ready to form new floor slabs at Platform and Ticket Hall levels.
  • New reinforced concrete supports were installed throughout the incline, followed by new cladding support steel work from the LMC through to UMC.
  • Fix new AATi Nosings to each step of double width staircase including landings.
  • Fix new stainless steel risers to each step of double width staircase including landings.
  • Lay new floor tile finish to each step of double width staircase including landings.
  • Apply sealant to all movement joints of each step of double width staircase including landings.

General

  • Premises finishes to Machine Chamber walls, floors, soffits, nosings and existing structural steel work.
  • Installation of new fire doors to Machine Chamber areas.
  • Form new POM Ramp.
  • Installation of platform ducting to service new PHP’s.
  • Stopaq Banding corrosion protection to new structural support steelwork within LMC.
