Kennington Station: – NLE Civil, Premises, Mechanical & Electrical Works

Project: Kennington Station – NLE Civil, Premises, Mechanical & Electrical Works

Client: FLO

Works Value: £1,500,000

D&D Rail Ltd carried out RIBA 5 design and build fit out package at Kennington stations new cross passages. The works included screeding, paving, windpost support steel, blockwork, rendering, tiling, suspended ceilings, CCTV, PAVA, CMS & lighting.

The new M&E parts of the contract required adding to the existing station systems and integrated into the system operation.

The formation of the cross passage tunnels were completed by the main contractor Ferrovial/ Laing O Rourke (FLO) prior to the premises package of works taking place. Once complete D&D Rail took possession of the cross passages and commenced the Premises fit out package of works.

Some of the work is illustrated below.

The floors to the passageways were screeded in preparation for new paving installation. The screed laid was bonded with Ardex A18 to the previously laid concrete subbase as shown below:

New wind posts were installed to support the new blockwork walls. These were fixed into the new tubbing rings of the cross passage at the head and resin fixed into the concrete floor kicker with Hilti chemical resin anchor system HY200A. All resin fixed bolts were pull tested to the manufacturer’s recommendations as shown below:

Once the wind posts were installed the blockwork was built and tied in with Ancon ties to the steel wind post frame. Ancon bed reinforcement was used in each joint for reinforcement of the mortar joints to protect from vibration from rolling stock as shown below:

Once the walls were completed and signed of as per the works test and inspection plan EML was fixed ready for render. The walls were fully rendered ready to accept the new tiling, the render was allowed to dry sufficiently and moisture levels were taken from the new render prior to the setting out and application of new tiling as shown below:

The new tiling within the newly formed cross passages were laid as per the architects plans to match existing tiling layout at this heritage station as shown below:

The existing platform tiled panels that were damaged during the mining works forming the new cross passages were removed & rebuilt to match original feature as shown below:

New Cable Management Systems for all new cables were installed around the station for new call points on platforms and new lighting /cameras for the new passages as shown below:

The existing Delta Lining to the platform walls had to be repaired following the cross passage cut through. New delta membrane was installed as per the manufacturer’s instructions. D&D Rail are qualified installers of the delta lining system. Once the Delta system was reinstated along with the new evaporation trays render was applied back to existing platform levels and decorated as shown below:

Primary grids were installed within the cross passages in preparation of the suspended ceiling systems. New bespoke suspended ceilings were installed to all new cross passages with hinges panels for access to services above as shown below:

Due to the gradients within some of the cross passages new platform barriers had to be installed. These were designed and fabricated and installed into the platform. The barriers had to be manufactured with a socket system so that they were demountable for access to invert hatches on the platform as shown below:

New architectural covers were fabricated and installed to enclose the Cable Management System previously installed:
