DDR would like to share some information recently published by HSE:

Don’t Become a Statistic!

The latest statistics on work-related health & safety have been published and reveal some startling figures – the HSE press release reveals the estimated number of workers in Great Britain suffering a work-related illness is 1.8 million with stress, depression, and anxiety making up around half of cases.

Workplace injuries in the construction sector have significantly increased, so this serves as a reminder to all of us not to become complacent.

I CHOSE TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY – Extract, By Don Merrell:

I could have saved a life that day,

But I chose to look the other way.

It wasn’t that I didn’t care;

I had the time, and I was there.

But I didn’t want to seem a fool,

Or argue over a safety rule.

I knew he’d done the job before;

If I spoke up he might get sore.

The chances didn’t seem that bad;

I’d done the same, he knew I had.

So I shook my head and walked by;

He knew the risks as well as I.

He took the chance, I closed an eye;

And with that act, I let him die.

I could have saved a life that day,

But I chose to look the other way

In support of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, DDR would like to share this article recently published by HSE:

World Mental Health Day – Working Minds

10 October is World Mental Health Day and the theme this year is ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.

Stress, depression and anxiety are the second biggest cause of work-related ill health in the construction industry.

The earlier a problem is tackled the less impact it will have for your workers and business.

HSE have five simple steps from their Working Minds campaign:

1.      Reach out and have conversations

2.      Recognise the signs and causes of stress

3.      Respond by agreeing relevant action points between employer and worker

4.      Reflect on the actions taken – have things improved?

5.      Make it Routine to check back in on how things are going

Starting a conversation is an important first step in preventing work-related stress in construction. If you need help getting conversations started, HSE’s Talking toolkit aims to help managers talk with workers as part of their overall approach to preventing and managing work-related stress.

If you think that a worker is having problems, encourage them to talk to someone, whether it’s their line manager, worker or trade union representative, GP or their occupational health team if available.

You can also access our partners Mates in Mind handbook or The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which provides free and confidential 24/7 support.
